Vectors of Hospitality
The Yijing (易經, I Ching) treats its sixty-four hexagrams not as an arbitrary catalogue but as a structural map of change — and that structure turns out to be, quite literally, the geometry of a six-dimensional hypercube. This case study argues that the resemblance is not decoration: the guà (卦) were never cold numbers to begin with, but living vectors of resonance and situational dynamics, and the hypercube is simply the native geometric language those vectors were already speaking.
Read this way, the binary doubling that generates two, four, eight, sixteen, thirty-two, sixty-four lines at each stage is the same compounding this framework has traced everywhere else it has looked: a single encounter between Host and Guest, complexifying without ever losing its founding asymmetry. The final section makes the deeper claim explicit — that relationality of this kind cannot be captured by a scalar, however large, and requires a vector: magnitude and direction both, direction being what makes a relation a relation at all.
Living Vectors, Not Dead Numbers
The Yijing frames its binary linear symbols — guà (卦), usually translated simply as "hexagram" — not as inert combinatorial counters but as living vectors of change, resonance, and situational dynamics.1 They are active, contrasting forces that constantly transform into one another, each line a standing invitation to become its opposite. Cosmoxenia's Host and Guest metanarrative operates in exactly this register: it shifts the frame from sterile computation to an active, fractal relationship, much like Indra's net — the Buddhist image of an infinite cosmic web in which every node reflects every other.2
The sequence of hypercubes shown above is not a metaphor borrowed from mathematics to illustrate the Yijing from outside. It reflects the native geometric language of the guà, because it mirrors their fundamental Boolean architecture directly: each line is a single bit, Host or Guest, broken or solid. The relative positions of the hexagrams on the vertices of an n-dimensional hypercube therefore reveal the precise logical, mathematical, and transformational relationships the tradition has always claimed for them — not as an analogy layered on top, but as the same structure named twice, once by a divinatory tradition three thousand years old and once by a branch of combinatorics that has never heard of it.
The Geometry of Doubling
The progression of Yin and Yang through the Yijing's traditional stages — line, bigram, trigram, and onward to the hexagram — is a binary doubling system (2n) that perfectly mirrors the vertex-counting sequence of n-dimensional hypercubes: two, four, eight, sixteen, thirty-two, sixty-four. This is a useful geometric model for how relational spaces compound, beginning with just the single foundational encounter between two dispositions. From a single line vector that unites a Host and a Guest, the interactive model above shows the evolutionary progression all the way through the six-dimensional hexeract, and by construction, beyond. It is a graphic illustration of the development of fractal relationality — what John Deely calls suprasubjectivity, the real relations between relationships that this framework has elsewhere named fractal hospitality.3
The progression also supplies a phenomenological analogy for an ordinary engineering concept. The Hamming distance between two vectors of equal length measures the minimum number of substitutions required to change one string into the other4 — the mathematical equivalent of finding the shortest path along the edges between two n-grams, in the sense of monogram, bigram, trigram, and so on up the ladder. Even as the hypercube expands toward arbitrarily many dimensions, the original Host/Guest relationship is preserved at every scale, however much it develops and complexifies in the process. Step up or down the dimensional ladder in the model above, and the same single edge-color code — which line differs — still governs every adjacency. The suprasubject, the total multi-dimensional macro-structure, remains reflective of that very first one-dimensional line vector.
The Minimal Encounter
Reality, on this framework's own terms, is inherently relational. The Host/Guest model suggests that otherness and receptivity are built into the fabric of being, not added later as a survival mechanism, and that the hemisphere division McGilchrist describes is about reality's fundamental structure as relational, receptive, and generative — more than it is about managing threats in a predator/prey sense. Consciousness itself is structured like endosymbiosis: different modes of being that, through their relationship, create the fullness of experience. We live, on this account, in a relationally constituted world.
The word "encounter" traces back to the Latin incontrāre, formed from in- (in) and contra (against).5 What is an encounter? An encounter is relationality itself, understood as the relation between a minimum of two agencies. We can think of these two agencies as the self and the other, or as Martin Buber's I and Thou,6 or as the Yijing's own ☷ ↔ ☰, and so on — the same minimal relation, named in whichever vocabulary happens to be doing the naming.
The host/guest, master/emissary, yin/yang asymmetries are, on this account, necessarily present in every encounter worth the name. The eighth-century Chan poem Sandōkai, attributed to Shitou Xiqian, makes essentially this claim about light and darkness: that each is bound up in the other, present within it rather than simply opposed to it, the way one foot is never fully separate from the other in the act of walking — each is what it is only in relation to its counterpart's movement.7 The encounter this framework describes is of exactly this nature. The host needs the guest; the master needs the emissary; yin needs yang. The hospitality hypothesis, on this reading, is not an addition bolted onto McGilchrist's hemisphere hypothesis. It is an expansion of it — the same asymmetry, followed further than the neuroscience alone requires it to go.
What the Paradigm Is, and Is Not
How might the Host/Guest paradigm help someone get a better sense of the true nature of reality? First, it helps to be clear about what it is not about. It is not about what the hemispheres do individually. It is not even, primarily, about the subjective quality of conscious awareness that either hemisphere may afford. What it is about is how these two distinct drives relate to each other, how they complement each other, and why they must complement each other for either to function at all.
This is exactly why symbiogenesis has been so illustrative throughout this project. Symbiogenesis describes the potentially synergistic benefits of cooperative relationships in biology — and, just as importantly, the failure modes those relationships remain vulnerable to. The Host/Guest paradigm expands this same logic to biology, psychology, culture, and metaphysics generally: the same synergies are available, and the same failure modes — parasitism, deception, coercion, and the value-inversions this framework has tracked since its earliest case study8 — remain waiting on the other side of every relationship that gets the asymmetry wrong.
Scalar and Vector
How, finally, should relationality itself be described? Not as a scalar, but as a vector. A scalar has magnitude only — a quantity, complete in isolation, needing nothing outside itself to be fully specified. A vector has magnitude and direction both, and direction implies relation: from one point, toward another. Vectors supply the minimal dimensional depth needed to describe an ethical relationship between two agents; a scalar cannot reach far enough to do that work, whatever its magnitude.
This vocabulary lets the framework say precisely what it means when it distinguishes a host who sees "the other to be cared for" from a guest who sees "the object to be manipulated." Instead of comparing two isolated scalars — each complete and measurable on its own before the two happen to meet — what this framework compares is two directional vectors.9 For the Host, this vector runs narrower-to-broader: other-as-whole. For the Guest, it runs broader-to-narrower: other-as-parts.
This is a relationship between relationships, in exactly the sense John Deely gives suprasubjectivity — a standing that exists only in and through a network of relations, irreducible to any subject considered on its own. If reality is a fractal cosmos of xenia — a potentially indeterminate number of nested relationships, with agents everywhere subjectively disposed toward other agents as guest or host in mutually entailing ways — then what actually exists is relationships of relationships, dynamically combining and recombining with each other at every scale, precisely as the hypercube above shows one stage doing to the next. The qualitative does not emerge from this structure after the fact. It is already a constitutive feature of the nested vector architecture itself. That genealogy of encounters is what supplies this framework's language for describing the inherently relational, axiological qualities of reality.
