Anchors, and the Third Thing

Case Study VIII-b closed with a question it had built the instrument for but not yet answered: can two people's overlapping D≤7 genetic spheres, each generated independently by the identical logic, be shown as one merged structure, linked only by an anchor — an individual who is, provably, the same person in both? What counts as an eligible anchor turns out to split cleanly in two, and the line isn't "ancestor versus collateral" the way it first looks — it's whether the anchor's own governing couple is already fully known. Recenter on an existing ancestor, and both members of that couple are already sitting in the sphere (ancestors always come in pairs); no new gate opens. The same is true, in the opposite direction, of the immediate child — both parents are already fully known people, nothing borrowed from outside. Recenter on a collateral relative instead, or on any descendant beyond the immediate child, and exactly one member of the relevant couple was ever known; the other was always an affine, and anchoring there opens a real gate rather than sidestepping one. An anchor is never just the one clicked point. Everyone standing between it and each sphere's own center is exactly as shared as the anchor itself — the whole lineal path, not one coincidence sitting on it — and for a full-collateral anchor, so is the shared ancestor's own partner, the other half of the couple the relation actually runs through.

Case Study VIII-a named the pattern this whole project keeps finding at every scale it looks: a Host and a Guest meet, and something genuinely new comes of it that neither could have produced alone — the Third Thing.1 A shared child was always the obvious candidate for what that pattern would look like inside this specific instrument, and it was, in one real sense, the easiest of the cases above to build: both parents' own spheres are already fully known data, so the child's own ancestor tiers don't need generating at all. Half of a child's 254 lineal ancestors — the entire maternal hemisphere — is simply Sphere A's own ancestor tree, relabeled; the other half is Sphere B's. Nothing here is guessed at the way a fresh independent sphere would have to be.

None of this addresses what a longer chain of spheres would mean, though the question came up before any of it was built. Link enough spheres through real shared ancestors, and a connection can be recovered between two people whose direct genetic distance would fall past the practical horizon where a single test between them shows anything at all — not a new relationship, but a real one, established the way genetic genealogists already triangulate distant matches through a network of closer, individually verifiable ones. Whether that's worth building, and how many spheres a legible picture can actually hold, is still open.
