Case Study — The Living Sign in Language
A note on this draft. This case study grew out of a personal record of learning Japanese, kept across seventeen years, and it retains some of that record's exploratory, first-person character rather than presenting itself as settled doctrine. A companion case study drawing on biosemiotic material from elsewhere in Cosmoxenia's own archive is planned to follow, and some passages here may be revised once that material is interleaved.
In Brief

A word is usually treated as an arbitrary label — any sound would do, so long as speakers agree to use it. This case study argues the opposite: that a sign's connection to what it signifies is not a social accident layered onto dumb sound, but a relation as real as any other in nature, and that the deepest evidence for this comes from watching what a mind does when its right hemisphere is left to answer alone. Patients whose left hemisphere has been experimentally suppressed do not merely accept that bread is called "bread." They insist it must be, because bread is crusty, and warm, and good — as though the name were fused to the thing, not stapled beside it.

If sign-relations are real rather than arbitrary, then a language is not a code to be decrypted but a structure that has, in its own historical unfolding, already worked out a great deal about how a mind ought to relate to what is not itself. Japanese makes this unusually explicit: a grammar that cannot complete a sentence without registering who is host and who is guest in the exchange, an entire register of speech (keigo) built from almost nothing else, and a distinction between inside and outside (uchi-soto) that organises social reality the way subject and object organise an English sentence.

The practical payoff follows directly. If a language is not an arbitrary map to be memorised but a living, unfolding instance of the Host/Guest asymmetry, then learning it is not accumulation but alignment — training the same disposition this framework has traced through symbiogenesis, AI alignment, developmental psychology, and world ritual, now applied to the very medium in which all of that argument has been made. The Way of Tea gives this state its own name, independent of Cosmoxenia entirely: hinshugokan.

The Sacred Sign

The ordinary assumption about words is that they are arbitrary. "Bread" could as easily have been "glorp"; nothing about the sequence of sounds has anything to do with the baked, crusty thing it names. This assumption is old, well-defended, and — Cosmoxenia argues — wrong at exactly the point where it matters most. Iain McGilchrist has described a striking piece of evidence against it. In patients whose left hemisphere has been experimentally suppressed, leaving the right to answer alone, the arbitrariness of naming does not hold up under questioning. Asked why bread is called "bread," such a patient will not shrug and say the label is a convention. They will insist the name is warranted — because bread is crusty, and satisfying, and good.1 The name, on this evidence, is not felt as arbitrary at all. It is felt as fused to the thing it names.

This is the same asymmetry the framework's own Ontological Onus names directly, applied now to language itself: a left-hemisphere view that treats words as an idealised formal system, a code of arbitrary tokens to be manipulated — Martin Buber's I-It — against a right-hemisphere view that encounters language as part of a holistic, embodied system rather than merely using it — Buber's I-Thou. The claim is not that the left hemisphere is wrong to find formal structure in language. It is that formal structure is not the whole of what a word is, and a mind cut off from the rest of itself insists otherwise only because it has lost access to the part that would know better.

This matters for the same reason CS2's account of AI mattered: it is a claim about embodiment, not mere etymology. Researchers studying sound symbolism have documented a universal human tendency to link sounds to meanings beyond arbitrary convention2 — effects found across unrelated languages, and even in infants too young to have learned any convention at all. If that tendency is real, it is not a curiosity confined to onomatopoeia. It suggests that the very structure of language may emerge from the same fundamental metaphysics and telos the hospitality hypothesis has been trying to articulate all along.

Japanese has its own word for this fusion, older than the neuroscience: kotodama (言霊), the spirit or soul held within a word. The traditional belief is not merely poetic — it holds that words carry a power capable of affecting the physical world, that a name spoken well can shape the reality it names rather than simply describing it after the fact. This case study is not committing Cosmoxenia to that belief in its strongest, most literal form. It is noting that kotodama, McGilchrist's clinical evidence, and sound symbolism research are converging, from three entirely unrelated directions, on the same underlying claim: that the connection between a sign and what it signifies is not merely social convention, agreed upon and forgettable, but something closer to a real relation in the world. If that is right, the "sacred or magical power" traditionally ascribed to words is not superstition standing apart from the rest of this framework. It is precisely what one would expect to find at the point where language touches the deeper metaphysics the Ontological Onus already names — the Encounter, and McGilchrist's Wager to treat the universe as a dance of alterity rather than dead machinery.

Why this matters for the whole framework. If naming is arbitrary, language is a tool: useful, but metaphysically inert, no more connected to reality than a filing system is connected to what it files. If naming is not arbitrary — if a sign genuinely participates in what it signifies — then language itself becomes a Guest that is never merely a Guest: something that has, at every moment of its use, a relation to reality richer than pure representation. Learning a language, on this reading, is not learning a code. It is entering a relationship already in progress.
II

The Case Against Arbitrariness

Theologian David Bentley Hart has pressed this claim to its metaphysical limit, arguing that language's emergence cannot simply have been an ascent from below — animal noise and gesture accumulating, by trial and accident, into grammar. Something like intelligible language, on his account, must in some sense have already been there in principle, drawing those noises and gestures upward into itself, impressing itself upon them as an organising form.3 That is a strong claim, invoking formal and final causality — a pull from a higher plane rather than a push from a lower one — and it can be reached from several different directions: Plato's Forms, the Christian Logos, Aristotelian hylomorphism, or a much more modest cousin of all three, teleological biosemiotics.

Biosemiotics is often treated as the modest option among these routes — the one that borrows a Platonic or Christian conclusion without paying the theological or metaphysical price of Forms or a divine Word. That undersells it badly. Charles Sanders Peirce's own ambition for the sign was not modest at all. He held that this universe is perfused with signs, if not composed exclusively of signs4 — a claim as cosmic in scope as anything Plato or Hart proposed, arrived at through a rigorous logic of relations rather than through revelation or dialectic. The lineage runs through Peirce rather than the more familiar structuralist tradition: where a purely differential account of meaning needs an entire system of oppositions already in place before any single sign can mean anything, Peirce's triadic sign — a representamen standing for an object, to an interpretant — works all the way down to a single organism responding to a single sign in its environment. Meaning-making, on this view, does not wait for language to arrive. Language is what happens when it has been going on long enough.

Peirce divided experience into three irreducible categories, and the second of them deserves particular attention here. Firstness is pure quality, felt before any relation to anything else. Secondness is brute resistance — the friction of one thing actually meeting another, reaction and reaction against reaction. Thirdness is representation itself, the mediating role a sign plays in connecting an object to an interpretant. CS2 already named friction as alterity's phenomenal signature, by way of Alva Noë's account of consciousness as disturbance and entanglement. Peirce had given that same observation its formal name and its place in a complete metaphysics a century earlier: secondness simply is that friction, elevated from a felt quality of experience to a category of being itself.

The Catholic philosopher John Deely pushed this further than most of Peirce's inheritors were willing to go, and his distinctive strength is less any single technical claim than the sheer breadth of intellectual history he was able to hold together. Deely traced the sign's genealogy across two and a half thousand years — Hippocrates, Plato, and Aristotle; the Stoics and Epicureans; Augustine and Aquinas; Duns Scotus and the underappreciated Portuguese scholastic John Poinsot; Locke; and finally Peirce, Jakob von Uexküll, and the twentieth-century biosemioticians — a lineage most historians of philosophy never connect at all.5 He was also careful to distinguish his own position from a cruder version of the same idea. Deely explicitly rejected pansemiotism — the claim that all things, living or not, currently possess signs — while still defending what he called physiosemiotics: the pre-existing patterns of knowability already present in non-living nature, available to become signs the moment some interpreting agent capable of reading them arrives. That distinction matters for how carefully this case study's own claim should be stated. Cosmoxenia is not arguing that a stone means something today. It is arguing that the raw capacity for meaning was never a late arrival bolted onto otherwise meaningless matter — the material for semiosis was already there, waiting.

Confucius reached a structurally similar conclusion from an entirely different tradition and register. Asked what he would do first if given charge of a state, he answered that he would rectify names — zhengming (正名) — on the conviction that when names are not correct, speech does not accord with things, and when speech does not accord with things, affairs cannot be carried to success.6 A name misapplied, on this account, is not a minor infelicity. It is a real fracture between word and world, with real consequences downstream.

III

Host and Guest, Grammaticalised

If the claim in Sections I and II is right — that sign-relations are real rather than arbitrary — then a fully developed language should show traces of whatever deeper structures a culture has spent centuries attending to. Japanese offers about as clean a test case as could be hoped for, because it does not merely permit Host/Guest-sensitive expression. It requires it.

Keigo (敬語), the honorific register, is not a polite option layered on top of a neutral sentence. Verb forms themselves change depending on the relative standing of speaker, listener, and the person being discussed; a sentence about the same event can be nearly unrecognisable depending on who is speaking to whom. A speaker cannot describe an action without simultaneously registering a relational judgment about who, in that moment, is holding the field and who is being received into it. This is not a cultural overlay on a neutral grammar. The grammar has no neutral setting to overlay.

The distinction between uchi (内, inside) and soto (外, outside) organises this even further, running through vocabulary choice, formality, and social obligation depending on whether a given person falls inside or outside the speaker's own circle — family, company, in-group — at that moment. Crucially, the boundary is not fixed to a person permanently. The same colleague can be uchi in conversation with a stranger and soto in conversation with a close friend, depending on which circle is momentarily salient. This is fractal hospitality in miniature: no one is only Host or only Guest, only ever positioned as one or the other relative to a particular frame, exactly as this framework has argued at every other scale.

IV

What Machines Cannot Learn

Machine translation is, on the terms this case study has been building, the continuum viewpoint applied directly to language. It treats a sentence in one language as a point to be mapped onto the nearest equivalent point in another, on the assumption that meaning is a stable, portable quantity that survives the crossing intact. The general semanticist Alfred Korzybski's warning — that a map is not the territory7 — applies here with unusual force. A map can be extremely good. It is still not the thing it maps, and as the complexity of what is being translated increases, the fidelity of any map tends to fall away faster than its confidence does.

Immersive acquisition takes the opposite route, and it is the relational viewpoint's route: not mapping a target language onto a source language's existing categories, but building an entirely new set of categories the source language never had reason to need. This is why mimicry — reproducing the sounds, rhythms, and social postures of a language before fully understanding them propositionally — often outperforms translation-based study for learners seeking genuine fluency rather than mere correspondence. Mimicry does not route new material through existing biases and preconceptions. It changes them.

None of this means translation software is worthless, any more than CS2 argued that computational functionalism is worthless. It means translation optimises for exactly the quantitative virtue the continuum viewpoint is good at — speed, coverage, portability — while remaining structurally unable to deliver the one thing immersion offers by design: a genuinely new way of carving up experience, rather than a faster route to the old one. A sufficiently advanced translator narrows the distance between two existing maps. It does not, and structurally cannot, hand a learner new territory.

V

Interchangeable

The Way of Tea (sadō, 茶道) has its own name for the state this entire case study has been arguing toward, arrived at independently of Cosmoxenia and centuries before it: hinshugokan (賓主互換), sometimes rendered hinshugokansei (賓主互換性). This is the highest expression of hospitality that the tea ceremony recognises. Instead of a static relationship where one person is host and the other is guest, each is capable of standing in the other's place without either identity being lost in the process.8 This is not merger. The host remains the host and the guest remains the guest, exactly as CS4's account of ritual hospitality insisted a genuine Host must remain bounded to remain a Host at all. What changes is that the distance between the two positions, at the moment of real encounter, stops mattering.

This is as concrete an instance as this framework has found anywhere of what CS2 called coincidentia oppositorum and translucence: not a compromise between Host and Guest, arrived at by splitting the difference, but a single act of attention in which each is fully present without diminishing the other. Traditional Japanese aesthetics has its own word for the asymmetry that makes this possible in the first place — fukinsei (不均整), the deliberate irregularity that keeps a composition alive rather than static — and its own vocabulary for tending it: satoyama for a landscape managed at the border between human settlement and wilderness, omotenashi for hospitality offered without expectation of anything in return.

Learning a language, on the account this case study has tried to build, is not memorising a map of another territory. It is training the same disposition this framework has traced everywhere else it has looked — in mitochondria, in AI architectures, in mycorrhizal networks, in a household shrine's lit lamp — applied now to the very medium through which all of that argument had to be made in the first place. A language does not merely describe the Host/Guest asymmetry from outside it, it embodies it. Spoken carefully enough, for long enough, it becomes one more place where the asymmetry is practiced.
